Another long day in the saddle today, through Mississippi and into Alabama. The day started out cold but sunny and clear. A really beautiful day as I left the cute town of Biloxi. For some reason I was in a pretty negative mood when I started this morning. When was from the east again and I was just sick and tired of every day facing that. Plus I knew I had a long day and long days after that so not super positive. I came across another cross country biker in the morning which gave me a lift and got me going. Surprisingly for the first time, a cross country biker wasn’t very friendly. As I approached he told me to have a nice day and waved me on. Almost always people like to stop and chat about the route and learn about mine. It kind of annoyed me a little at the time to be honest but to each his own I guess. He actually found me on Strava later and send a nice message. It seemed like he was just having a tough day, we all have those for sure!
The rest of the day went pretty smoothly, roads were good with nice shoulders for the most part except for the final section of 90 in Mississippi that was just terrible! Once in Alabama though the roads are great again. Stopped at a roadside restaurant in Bayou La Batre that said “good seafood cook fast”, how do you pass that up? Turned out to be some of the best seafood I’ve had so far, the restaurant, if you want to call it that, was more like a fish and bait shop serving fresh caught seafood, mostly fried, but really delicious. I had a shrimp Po boy that was bigger than my head, it was delicious and of course ate the whole thing! After that I took a very cool ferry across Mobile Bay and then a fantastic final 30 miles from Fort Morgan all the way to Orange Beach about half of it through beautiful parks and dedicated bikeways.
I’m putting in some long mileage this week and it’s definitely starting to wear on me. I think I’ll just barely make it to St Augustine!
